The Reef’s Spring Spectacle!

The Reef’s Spring Spectacle!

Spring has sprung, and that can only mean one thing…coral spawning season is right around the corner!

Each year, as the waters of the Great Barrier Reef warm and the conditions are just right, something incredible happens beneath the surface. Across the reef, coral colonies synchronise their reproduction and release tiny bundles of eggs and sperm into the water.

For a few special nights, the reef comes alive in a completely different way.

What is Coral Spawning?

Coral spawning is one of the most fascinating events on the Great Barrier Reef. Rather than reproducing throughout the year, many coral species release their eggs and sperm at the same time, creating an incredible underwater spectacle.

The tiny bundles float upwards through the water, often looking like an underwater snowstorm. As they drift through the reef, eggs and sperm meet, creating the next generation of coral.

It’s a pretty amazing thought, what you’re witnessing is the beginning of new life on the reef.

Why Does Coral Spawning Happen at Night?

Coral spawning usually takes place after dark, which makes the experience even more special.

Once the sun sets, the reef becomes a completely different place. Nocturnal creatures emerge, fish settle into their sleeping spots, and your dive lights reveal parts of the reef you might never notice during the day.

Then, as spawning begins, the water around you can suddenly fill with tiny colourful bundles being released from the coral.

It’s one of those underwater moments that is difficult to put into words until you’ve experienced it yourself.

When Does Coral Spawning Happen?

There isn’t one exact night when the entire Great Barrier Reef spawns. Timing can vary between different reefs and coral species and is influenced by factors including water temperature, the lunar cycle and local conditions.

This is part of what makes coral spawning so exciting, there is a little bit of anticipation involved in waiting for the reef to tell us it’s ready.

And when it happens, you’re there to witness it.

Experience Coral Spawning With Us

This year, we have two very special opportunities to experience coral spawning after dark.

On 29 October 2026, we’ll head to Magnetic Island for our Magnetic Island Coral Spawning experience.

Then on 28 November 2026, we’ll take you out to the Great Barrier Reef for a separate Coral Spawning experience.

Two different locations, two different nights, and the chance to witness one of the reef’s most incredible natural events.

Whether you’re a passionate diver, a marine life lover, or simply fascinated by the incredible things happening beneath the surface, coral spawning is an experience you won’t want to miss.

So, as spring arrives and the reef gets ready for its annual spectacle, the question is…

Are you ready to see the reef come alive?
